The Prince of Wales Theatre

Year 1884 marked the debut of Prince of Wales Theatre which was named as Prince’s Theatre. After two years it was changed in the honour of future Edward II. Initial few decades hosted some of the famous productions of W. S. Gilbert, Ibsen and Sheriden. The first English musical comedy was hosted in the year 1892, George Edwardes in Town.

Prince of Wales also hosted some of the famous productions like the debut plat of Ivor Novello, The Rat in the year 1924. The popularity of theatre led to the rebuilding of the theatre with larger occupancy for seating.

The theatre reopened in the year 1937 and went on hosting some of the famous shows including premiere of movie, Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Prince of Wales enjoyed huge success during the era of 50s along with varied acts like Norman Wisdom, Peter Sellers, Benny Hill and Morecambe and Wise.

Some other popular hits of Prince of Wales Theatre are Funny Girl, Bedroom Farce, Underneath the Arches and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love. ABBA musical Mamma Mia become the longest running show until 2012. Now, the show is transferred to Novello Theatre. Currently, the multi-award winning Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon is running with packed houses.
